Our afternoon will begin with a facilitated activity on making space for creative process using Visual Goal Mapping.  You will then learn how to fine tune your "30 second introduction," key in order to clearly and confidently express your business to potential clients.  In the evening we will listen to panelists (fellow artists, curators and business owners) explore thought-provoking elements of the artistic process and exhibiting and selling your work.  Following each speaker's presentation, we will enjoy a panel discussion with audience Q+A.

Your participation is requested!  All are welcome, whether you are new, emerging, or an established artist. Whether or not you are already exhibiting your work, have gallery representation, are documenting your work, working with collectors, or selling your fine art as individual pieces or limited editions, your voice is valued and we would love for you to join us as part of the conversation!

Robin Holliday, Owner/Curator HorseSpirit Arts Gallery, Historic Savage Mill, Savage, MD.

After working in National Security for 26 years, Robin Holliday experienced several life-changing events that helped her realize that life is precious and short. She decided to leave her career to pursue her life-long dream, to embark on her own personal journey as an artist and to own an art gallery.

Robin envisioned an eclectic, uplifting gallery representing only local artists, a sanctuary from the outside world where artwork could remind people of the goodness of life. She also wanted to create a community of artists who support one another.

In 2013, Robin opened HorseSpirit Arts Gallery, a small, one-room gallery where she exhibited her own artwork and that of a few local artists. In 2015, she moved HorseSpirit Arts Gallery to Old Ellicott City Main Street, where it continued to grow until she represented over 40 local artists. After suffering significant losses from two devastating floods in 2016 and 2018, Robin chose to leave Old Ellicott City.

In November 2018, she reopened her gallery at Historic Savage Mill, MD with 42 local artists. The gallery now includes paintings, sculpture, photography, glass, mosaics, jewelry, ceramics, woodworking, and fiber and wearable art.

Robin designs and creates one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry from natural gemstones. She also creates crystal sun catchers and mobiles. Her jewelry is made from stones such as Amethyst, Pearls, Turquoise and Black Onyx, combined with her metalwork. Her sun catchers & mobiles are styled using faceted lead crystal prisms (both new and recycled) and hand-made lampwork beads. When the sunlight hits the crystal prisms, it is refracted and creates beautiful rainbows throughout the room. Robin creates everything using sterling silver-plated or 24K gold-covered wire & findings.

Thomas Engleman, Assistant Professor, Art Director, Howard Community College Art Galleries, Columbia, MD.

Karen Isailovic, Owner/CEO, Root Studio, Creative Wellness Center, Columbia, MD.

Karen Isailovic is a creative visionary with much experience curating exhibitions, the largest project showcasing over 50 artists. She opened her business, Root Studio, in Columbia in 2017. There are four pivotal “seeds” which nurtured Karen’s vision for Root Studio.  They are: openness, community, innovation, and wellness.  Karen is extremely passionate about the creative process and dedicates her life’s work to inspiring and encouraging others to utilize creative practice as a means to mental wellness - self-care for their mind, body & spirit. Today, Karen continues to bring together artists who work in a variety of media – from painting to audio and digital media – in a cluster of spacious studios tucked into Rivers 95 business park on Guilford Road.

Beginning in 2002 Karen began training as a painter through courses in the continuing studies program at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, and the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, DC.  In 2015 Karen dove deep into abstract painting, which continues to be her chosen genre.

Karen sells and exhibits her work locally.  She has exhibited in Howard County, Frederick, Annapolis and Baltimore galleries.

    Program Description, Day 1:

Carl Caylor, M.Photog.,Cr., CPP, F-WPPA: "Before, After, and How to Get There"

PPA Members who attend 6.5 hours of Carl's class will be eligible to receive 1 PPA Continuing Education Merit!

This program will take you on a Natural Light and OCF Journey from the open scene you walk up to…all the way to a finished portrait.  Carl will go through his thought process of why he chose the location. He will show how to use existing design elements.  He will show usable light within the area and how to pose within that light.  He will share how his thoughts for the finished print evolve from vision to reality with darkroom techniques that anyone can master.

Carl’s goal is to open our mind to the thought process that goes on when creating an image for both PPA print competition and for your client.  He will discuss light, posing within the light, color harmony, composition, and more of the 12 elements of an artistic image in terms of client work and PPA Print Competition.

When you leave this program, you will find new backgrounds in places you would normally walk by. You will see usable light, depth and dimensions like never before. You will understand when and how to work without strobes.  You will know how to create emotion in your work and how to use psychology to your advantage. Yes. It is a lot to take in, but you can’t help but learn with the real stories, straight forward explanations and demonstrations of each and every detail.

    Speaker Bio

Carl Caylor, M.Photog., Cr., CPP, F-WPPA, Kodak-Alaris Mentor

"If beauty was only skin-deep, every photograph would reveal the same personality.  We create portraits.  An artistic expression that goes past the outer layer, beyond first impressions, and into the abyss of one's defining essence."     - Carl Caylor

Carl is a Kodak Mentor and has been involved with photography for over 25 years. He started his photographic career in the darkroom as a custom printer and technician.  He is PPA Certified, a Master Photographer, a Craftsman with Professional Photographers of America and an International Judge.  He has won numerous national awards for his photography, including 18 PPA Loan Collections and several Kodak Gallery and Fuji Masterpiece Awards.

Carl is one of the most sought after instructors in the country because of his "Hands-On" coaching approach.  Don't plan on just watching in this class... Carl will challenge you to become a better photographer than you already are.  His photographic skills are just part of what will help each student.  His greatest strength is his ability to see what skills others already posses and then find ways to help enhance those skills to a new level.

Carl Prides himself on giving a program that contains useful information rather than just a "show and tell" session.  You will be inspired. You will be reminded of things you already know.  Most importantly, you will learn new, useful ideas that will make you a better artist and a more salable photographer.
