Photographing and Fundraising with Furry Family Members

    Wednesday, May 22, 2019

    1:00pm - 9:30pm

    an extended day program with

Lisa Asp, M. Photog., M. Artist, Cr., CPP

    and MDPPA's very own

    Ellen Zangla, M.Photog., CPP

(day program: 1-5:30pm, dinner break: 5:30-7:00pm,

    evening program: 7-9:30pm)

We appreciate sponsorship from  ACI American Color Imaging!

Join Lisa Asp, M. Photog., M. Artist, Cr., CPP and Ellen Zangla, M. Photog., CPP,  for a full day of four-legged fun.  This duo brings together two full-time careers of working with dogs – one dedicated to studio portraits, the other to outdoor portraits – to get you up to speed on all things dog - one of the fastest growing niche markets in photography today.

Participants will learn dog behavior including body language, signs of stress, and safety practices when working with dogs.  We will discuss the importance of a “dog wrangler” and how to quickly train your client how to be your assistant if you don’t have one.  You will see how to attractively pose dogs – what works and what doesn’t, as well as the best ways to get and keep their attention. Then, get ready to play!  Live demos both in studio and outdoors will put this new knowledge to work.

After dinner, we will switch gears and talk about fundraising and how you can use it to market and grow your business, as well as other marketing strategies  – topics that Lisa and Ellen use in their studios every day, and things that ANY photographer can use regardless of niche.

Photographing and Fundraising with Furry Family Members is a PPA Continuing Education Class! MDPPA strongly supports continuing education for photographers as well as the pursuit of degrees in MDPPA and PPA.  PPA Members attending this full class will qualify to receive 1 PPA Merit!

    About Lisa

Lisa Asp, M. Photog., M. Artist, Cr., CPP, grew up in Minnesota.  She moved to the east coast in 1998 and opened an upscale, retail photography studio in Connecticut.  When her husband was offered a job in Minnesota, they jumped at the chance to move back near family & friends and relocated in 2011.  After purchasing and renovating a house, Asp opened "Tangerine House of Design", a full-time home-based studio, in Edina, MN.  Pet photography had previously been a small part of her business but took off at this point and became her niche market.

Lisa has won numerous awards for her work including five Kodak Gallery awards, Fuji Masterpiece, Lexjet, PPA District First Place and GIA Second Place, and more.  Receiving PPA “Photographer of the Year” status the last 8 years straight, Asp has been named one of PPA's "Elite Plus" members.  She enjoys volunteering her time with several pet rescues photographing their adoptable animals, fostering and assisting in their fundraisers and food drives.  Her love of animals has grown into wildlife (and landscape) photography and has teamed up with another photographer to launch “Inspire Photo Tours” – small group educational and photographic experiences to help others explore the world photographically.  She is a past president of the Twin Cities Professional Photography Association, Director of the Animal Image Makers Conference, and a PPA Councilor.

    About Ellen

Ellen Zangla, M.Photog., CPP, has been photographing pets since 2009. She loves animals—she can’t walk past dogs without petting them, adores cats and has a soft spot for lizards. Most of Ellen’s photography is outdoors, although she does photograph pets who don’t go outside, such as many cats, at their homes. Ellen truly loves what she does and feels like she has the perfect job.

Giving back to the community is a guiding principle of her business. Ellen has raised nearly $30,000 for a variety of charitable organizations, including a number of animal rescue groups. She recently launched a book project, “Tails of Loudoun County,” with a goal of raising $25,000 for animals in need in Loudoun County.

Ellen has received PPA’s “Photographer of the Year” status three times, has been a Grand Imaging Award Finalist in the Animal Portrait Category, and MDPPA’s Portrait Photographer of the Year. She lives with her husband, son, two dogs, and four cats.
