    Program Details

#bemoresuccessful: Creating and Maintaining a Profitable, Sustainable, Successful Business

Do not miss this chance to spend time with and learn from PPA Master Photographer, ASP Education Fellow, Profit First Professional and StoryBrand Certified Guide, Mary Fisk-Taylor. Mary will share how she has created two sustainable photography businesses with the help of her business partners. She will cover how extensive branding, public relations, dynamic sales plans and powerful marketing strategies have kept their studios in both extremely profitable and sustainable.

Mary and her partners own and operate two extremely successful photography studios in their market area of Richmond, Virginia. The small home studio specializes in high-end wall portrait installations and custom designed weddings and their newer addition is a high-volume high school senior and boutique event business. They gross well over one million dollars a year in professional photography and are very proud of the sustainable and profitable brands that they have built in their market area.

Highlights of the program will include low cost but very high impact marketing plans and great sales techniques for all types of studios. Whether you are a seasoned professional or just starting out in the professional photography industry this is a day of priceless knowledge and information.

"Sculptured by the Light: Advanced Low-Key Lighting Techniques for the Human Body"

What started as a charity project for a theater to raise money, developed into a journey of light and shadow. As portrait photographers we daily manipulate the clothed human body to achieve a desired outcome. However, when we don’t have clothing as an aid for covering the body you must rely on a different set of skills to transform the body into a work of art.

Join Jamie Hayes as he shares with you the advanced lighting and posing techniques he used to create the most artistic and creative portraits of his career.

Jamie will share with you how his simple lighting concept, light modifiers and posing techniques  allowed him the creative freedom to achieve these results.

Day 1: 7-9:30 - evening program planning in progress

Day 2: 10am - Finish - Print Competition! Judges: Carl Caylor and (TBD)

    Program Description, Day 1:

Carl Caylor, "Before, After, and How to Get There"

PPA Members who attend 6.5 hours of Carl's class will be eligible to receive 1 PPA Continuing Education Merit!

This program will take you on a Natural Light and OCF Journey from the open scene you walk up to…all the way to a finished portrait.  Carl will go through his thought process of why he chose the location. He will show how to use existing design elements.  He will show usable light within the area and how to pose within that light.  He will share how his thoughts for the finished print evolve from vision to reality with darkroom techniques that anyone can master.

Carl’s goal is to open our mind to the thought process that goes on when creating an image for both PPA print competition and for your client.  He will discuss light, posing within the light, color harmony, composition, and more of the 12 elements of an artistic image in terms of client work and PPA Print Competition.

When you leave this program, you will find new backgrounds in places you would normally walk by. You will see usable light, depth and dimensions like never before. You will understand when and how to work without strobes.  You will know how to create emotion in your work and how to use psychology to your advantage. Yes. It is a lot to take in, but you can’t help but learn with the real stories, straight forward explanations and demonstrations of each and every detail.

    Speaker Bio

Carl Caylor, PPA Certified, M.Photog., Cr., F-WPPA, Kodak-Alaris Mentor

"If beauty was only skin-deep, every photograph would reveal the same personality.  We create portraits.  An artistic expression that goes past the outer layer, beyond first impressions, and into the abyss of one's defining essence."     - Carl Caylor

Carl is a Kodak Mentor and has been involved with photography for over 25 years. He started his photographic career in the darkroom as a custom printer and technician.  He is PPA Certified, a Master Photographer, a Craftsman with Professional Photographers of America and an International Judge.  He has won numerous national awards for his photography, including 18 PPA Loan Collections and several Kodak Gallery and Fuji Masterpiece Awards.

Carl is one of the most sought after instructors in the country because of his "Hands-On" coaching approach.  Don't plan on just watching in this class... Carl will challenge you to become a better photographer than you already are.  His photographic skills are just part of what will help each student.  His greatest strength is his ability to see what skills others already posses and then find ways to help enhance those skills to a new level.

Carl Prides himself on giving a program that contains useful information rather than just a "show and tell" session.  You will be inspired. You will be reminded of things you already know.  Most importantly, you will learn new, useful ideas that will make you a better artist and a more salable photographer.
