MDPPA Spring Image Competition!

Our Themed Category for this competition is Night Photography! Participants are encouraged to unleash their creativity and experiment with various techniques to convey the unique atmosphere of the night. From long exposures that paint streaks of light across the darkness to astrophotography revealing the wonders of the cosmos, there are endless possibilities to explore.

Get up to 5 image critiques. Critiques are $10 each and can be requested up to three days after the competition.
If your image has already merited at an MDPPA image competition or earned a medal at IPC, it is no longer eligible to be entered into an MDPPA quarterly competition.

Our Spring Image Competition judges are:
Chris Wooley, M. Photog., Cr., CPP, F-PPW
Chris Wooley is a photographer and educator with a retail portrait studio in Spokane, Washington where he specializes in Vintage Inspired Portraits and Commercial Business Portraits. He holds the Master Photographer and Photographic Craftsman degrees and Certified Professional Photographer status from the Professional Photographers of America, where he also serves as a counselor, advocating for photographer rights. He is a past-President of the Professional Photographers of Washington. Chris has won numerous print awards, including multiple Fuji Masterpieces, ACI’s Image Excellence, and various state “best of” awards. He is a recipient of the prestigious “PPA National Award” for his contributions towards the photographic industry. Chris helps photographers learn and hone their craft by presenting at workshops, conferences, and meet-ups across the US.
Joan Genest M.Photog., Cr.
Joan became a professional photographer in 1980, joined PPA in 1983, is a Master Craftsman Photographer and a PPA Life Member. Joan has won many image awards and one of her proudest moments was when she received the Kodak Gallery Elite award for her image titled Beach Walkers. Joan has served on PPA’s Photographic Exhibition Committee and as chairman of the Juror Excellence Committee. Joan became a PPA Approved Juror in 2000 and a PPA Jury Chairman in 2014. She has received the PPA National Award from CTPPA and the American Society of Photographers.
Kristy Steeves, M.Photog, M.Artist, Cr, CPP, F-ASP
Kristy Steeves graduated from Indiana University with two Bachelor of Arts degrees in journalism and political science. She worked as a television news reporter for 25 years before switching careers to become a professional photographer. She specializes in children, high school seniors, corporate headshots, pets, and wildlife. Kristy is actively involved in the photography industry serving as a PPA approved international juror and an elected council member. She also served on the Board of Governors with the American Society of Photographers. Kristy has won various awards including 4 television Emmy awards, PPA Diamond Photographer of the Year, Ohio Photographer of the Year and is a two-time finalist for the IPC Grand Imaging Award with 2nd place in the Photographic Open Album Category. She is also the recipient of the Imaging Excellence award. Kristy is a PPA webinar instructor, an Imaging USA speaker and has earned PPA’s 100EDU speaker bar. She is also the recipient of the ASP Gold Medallion and State Elite awards. She is an ASP Fellow – the highest honor a professional photographer can achieve. Only 130 photographers have earned this designation in the history of photography.
Dennis Hammon M. Photog., Cr., CPP, F-PPI, F-IPPA, F-ASP
Dennis Hammon is a native of Idaho, growing up on a small farm, but had the itch to see the world and travel. Thanks National Geographic. With degrees in biology and geology he added photography to his education and 45+ years later he is still doing what he loves. He has earned the Master of Photography and Photographic Craftsman from PPA. He was one of the first photographers in the country to become certified and later on served on the certification committee for PPA. He has been on PPA Council for most of 35 years, Affiliate Juror for over 30 years, served as President of ASP as well as receiving the Fellow of Photography from ASP. Serving his local affiliates has been president of Idaho and Utah PPA’s and has received 4 National Awards for his service to the photographic industry.
David Foltz, M.Photog.M.Wed.Photog.Cr., BFA, NR-AEMT
David Foltz is a high school senior portrait and sports photographer based in Luray, VA. He is a 2020 Virginia Professional Photographers Association (VPPA), 2021 Professional Photographers Association of Pennsylvania (PPA of PA) Maker of the Year award recipient. David is an active competitor in state print competitions and at his first international photographic competition, one of his images won a spot on Team USA at the 2021 World Photographic Cup and numerous Bronze, Silver, and IE awards through PPA. Thanks to his Bachelors of Fine Arts Degree from The Art Institute of Washington, David has a large skill set that helps him diversify his range of subjects and environments and allows him to help others achieve success in all fields. In 2022 he was brought onto Pennsylvania and Virginia’s social media teams and this year became the Marketing & Social Media Chairperson for PPA of PA, designing social media content for the affiliate. When David isn’t out on a session or behind a computer creating you will most likely find him on an ambulance responding to 911 calls as a volunteer Nationally Registered Advance EMT.
