Making the Jump to Commercial Photography (afternoon) and Modern Senior Portraiture (evening)

A PPA Charities and PPA Continuing Education Class!

Thank you to PPA Charities for Sponsorship!

“Making the Jump to Commercial Photography” 1:00pm-5:00pm

Dan will discuss his transition from portrait photography into commercial photography and share the steps he took to make the jump successfully, including tips for building a portfolio, networking with art directors and a technical dissection of how he creates his high-impact imagery.  This segment will include live location shooting with tethered capture so you can see the process of transforming a location using lighting.

In an increasingly saturated portrait market, Dan has found both steady business and creative satisfaction in photographing commercial imagery for Division 1 universities, record labels, an NFL team and several emerging companies. His commercial imagery serves as "street cred" with his portrait clients and helps him differentiate his brand from competition.

Dinner Break 5-6:30pm

Business Meeting 6:30-7pm

“Modern senior portraiture” 7:00pm-9:30pm

Dan will open the floodgates to his brain and share his most useful insights on relevant senior portraiture. He will break down how his images fuse the best of both sides of the industry divide: the new school style of authentic portraiture and the old school style of technical excellence. Dan will take you deep into his image making process and explore using lighting, framing and subject interaction to solve problems and create variety on senior shoots. Dan will also touch on his unique approach to business and share how he books all of his dates without a model program or specific social media regimen, instead focusing on word-of-mouth and give-back marketing.

Bio:

Dan McClanahan became a photographer in 2009 with the goal of creating a fresh alternative to traditional photography in his market. His quest was so successful that his work quickly made waves in the photo industry with multiple Grand Imaging Awards from Professional Photographers of America (PPA), Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) awards, magazine features and becoming one of the youngest photographers in history to receive all three photography degrees bestowed by PPA. Dan owns and operates McClanahan Studio with his best friend and beautiful wife, Alex. He splits his time between advertising photography and high school senior photography. The couple live and work with their daughter in a twelve thousand square foot historic building they renovated and share with nine tenants.   Outside work Dan is a small town Iowa introvert that loves Jesus, his family, punk rock drumming and strong coffee.
